The Walking Death : chapter 1 - When It All Began

Summary : Yoochun is telling a story. The story of how they ended up in a dead city, fighting for their lives.
NB : many thanks to my awesome 3ternallove for the beta-reading. The name of the city is coming from my imagination.

Okay, is everything ready?
You really want to do this?
Yeah, we need to make this video, so everybody will know what happened. Maybe it'll prevent other cities to fall like this one did.
And what if it's too late?
We'll see. We have to try. Yunho, is the camera set up?
Wait-wait-wait… Done. You can talk.
Okay, let's go then. Hello to anybody who will get this video. My name is Park Yoochun. I'm a Korean citizen, and I'm stuck with my four friends in the city of Hyunwoh, which is by now a dead city. This film will tell you our story…

Yoochun looked up at the sky from under his hat. It was a beautiful afternoon of September, and the sun was still hot and high between the light clouds.
He couldn't help but smile. He and the guys were going to watch a movie since their interview ended sooner than they thought. They had the rest of the day to have fun, before flying back to Seoul the next day in the morning. Before they could go, behind him, a loud thud could be heard, and he turned only to see Changmin on the floor, cursing under his breath.
- I told you not to run in the stairs! Sighed Jaejoong.
Junsu giggled, and Yunho rolled his eyes, smiling. The younger of the team pouted and proceeded on getting up.
- If I wouldn't have run we would have been late.
- We're already late, said a smirking Yoochun.
- Yes, but…

…wait a minute, why do you have to tell them that I fell?
Because it's the story, and it involves you falling in the hotel front door stairs.
Come on hyung, you only said this so people would laugh at me!
Well, guess a bit of laugh wouldn't be bad, right?

Okay, okay, sorry, I didn't mean to upset you. Let's skip to the interesting part.

Jaejoong put his sunglasses on, and nodded.
- So, where's the cinema?
Yunho, eyes glued to his cellphone, pointed the other end of the street.
- This way. Then first on the right, and after a few minutes walking it's right in front of us.
- Your phone is telling you that?
- It's called GPS on a cell phone, stupid.
The oldest hit the leader playfully in the arm, and the whole team began to walk. The street was really crowded, cars driving slowly, creating some traffic jam, till it stopped totally, allowing the boys to go faster, walking between cars.
- Hey, that's weird…
Changmin pushed Junsu, trying to see what he was talking about.
- What the…
- Hey stop!
Yoochun, Jaejoong and Yunho sighed at the same time, Jae looking more than slightly annoyed.
- What did you kids have found this time?
Mouth hanging open, Min pointed to behind a cab; Junsu, next to him, was frowning. The three other boys came to see, and the leader hiccuped from surprise.
- What the fuck…
Yoochun wolf-whistles, and Jaejoong just went blank.
On the road, next to the sidewalk, there were dozens of rats and other little rodents, running in the same wave, apparently in a hurry.
- Where are they going? Asked Changmin from no one in particular.
- Or what do they want to escape from? Jae groaned.
This sentence alone made the five Koreans feel bad, as if those were some cursed words.
Junsu shrugged and took Yoochun by his arm.
- Come on, Chunnie~ah, we should hurry too or we'll be really late for the movie.
- Okay, the baritone answered, but let's go back on the sidewalk…
The guys nodded silently, and no one questioned why they couldn't stay on the car way.
They walked not too far. Something has happened.
Yunho was the first to notice that something was wrong. The light of the day was fading too fast, and the voices around were shutting up one after one. Also feeling that something was wrong, Yoochun looked up to the sky, and gasped. There was a fine layer of grey dirt coming from the other end of the street, acting like clouds, obscuring the place. Adding to this, real clouds began to spread, and the atmosphere felt like those days in the early winter, when the storm is coming but not there yet. Everything was grey and dark…
And then the first scream resounded.
It was just a scream, like someone who just had been pranked, or afraid of a little something, or even angry about the traffic jam. But then there was another scream. And another.
The whole place went silent, citizens looking at each other, wondering what the hell was happening as more and more people were screaming, yelling their lungs out.
The boys stopped. They were too stunned. They watched around, trying to understand, not daring to talk.
The lights went lower, and the screaming was deafening. Some people began to run.
The hysteria just had begun.
